In October a painting by Jacobus Hendrik Pierneef, SA’s best-known 20th century landscape painter, was impounded by the Hawks, and Outgoing premier Ace Magashule was implicated in its disappearance.

That is a particularly headline-grabbing example of an art crime, but what is the state of art theft in SA?
