A man met a watery death after he accidentally reversed a truck he was offloading from a ship into the Durban harbour on Tuesday.

National police spokesperson Lt-Col Katlego Mogale told TimesLIVE that incident occurred in the early morning.

"It is alleged that a few hours ago, workers were removing a vehicle from the vessel and as the driver reversed, he accidentally drove into water and drowned."

Mogale said a search-and-rescue team was summoned to the scene.

"Minutes later the body of the driver was recovered. An inquest docket will be opened."

"Police are still at the scene," said Mogale.
