Protesters, angry about the installation of prepaid electricity meters, blocked roads with burned tyres and rocks in Diepsloot, Soweto, early on Friday morning.

Several roads were blocked with rocks and burning tyres in Diepkloof, Soweto, early on Friday morning.

Johannesburg metro police department (JMPD) spokesperson chief superintendent  Wayne Minnaar said the protests started at around 4am.

Minnaar said Ben Naude Drive and Immink Drive were blocked.

He said the Golden Highway was also blocked off, but officers managed to disperse protesters.

The protest was about the installation of prepaid electricity units.

Motorists were advised to use alternative routes.
