Protesters block roads with rocks and burning tyres in Diepkloof

Protesters, angry about the installation of prepaid electricity meters, blocked roads with burned tyres and rocks in Diepsloot, Soweto, early on Friday morning.

Several roads were blocked with rocks and burning tyres in Diepkloof, Soweto, early on Friday morning.

Johannesburg metro police department (JMPD) spokesperson chief superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the protests started at around 4am.

Minnaar said Ben Naude Drive and Immink Drive were blocked.

He said the Golden Highway was also blocked off, but officers managed to disperse protesters.

Rea Vaya T1, T2 and C1 buses are diverted to N17 to connect Motorway via Riverlea to Joburg CBD due to service delivery protest in and around Diepkloof in Soweto. Buses will not travel through to Noordgesig.We apologise for the inconvenience.^CL
