Severe thunderstorms with a possibility of hail, heavy downpours and strong winds were forecast for parts of Gauteng and five other provinces on Monday.

The South African Weather Service issued a warning for foul weather that could include lightning.

“Severe thunderstorms are expected over the north-eastern parts of the Eastern Cape, western parts of KwaZulu-Natal, the eastern parts of Free State, parts of Gauteng, the Highveld and escarpment areas of Mpumalanga and the southern and central parts of Limpopo,” the service said in its travellers’ forecast for Monday.

Johannesburg, with a maximum temperature of 28°C, was expected to get scattered showers and thundershowers from the afternoon until Monday evening.
