Four must-read stories on the death of Thoriso Themane

A video of the lifeless body of Thoriso Themane, 27, was widely shared on social media on Tuesday as many called for the alleged culprits, a group of school pupils in Polokwane, to be brought to justice.

No plan to deal with alleged learners 

Limpopo MEC of education Ishmael Kgetjepe said the department would have to make a decision about dealing with the learners implicated in the death of Themane in consultation with the police. 

Thoriso's father speaks 

The victim's father, Mahlapahlapana Thoriso, shared his devastating story in an interview with eNCA on Wednesday.

The father detailed his last moments with his son and the panic that came with not knowing his whereabouts on the day he was attacked. 

"When he didn't return on Saturday, we were perplexed because he was not the type of fellow that would be away without notice. And if he would be running late for one reason or the other, he would call and say, 'Papa we're still here, we're practising'."

Father of implicated learner says his son is not untouchable

Sowetan reported that a  15-year-old son of a retired police officer is one of the five boys implicated in the murder.

In one of the viral videos, a school learner is asked "Mfana ke gore o kwa botse ka gore o bolaile motho?" (Do you feel happy that you killed a person?)

The learner replies, "Akere ke ya tseba Tyma yaka yena le ka se mo dire selo." (I know my father is untouchable.)

"I can't send my son to do crime, it was just a group of naughty boys who got involved in something they know nothing about," the father said.

A petition on the rise 

An online petition calling for justice for the victim has gained momentum accumulating  more than 57,000 signatures so far. The petition is mainly addressed to the department justice.
