Emmanuel Tjiya says taking home top honours at the inaugural Cape Town Experiences (CTEX) Awards has left him humbled, as 40% of the votes are from readers.

Tjiya won the Best Entertainment Column award for his contribution in Sowetan and Sunday World.

The awards are hosted by Cape Town Experiences Magazine and recognise participation and excellence in various journalism fields.

“The public voted for him and that makes it more special. It shows that we have a knowledgeable journalist who appeals to entertainment followers,” said Sowetan’s executive editor, Thembela Khamango.

Tjiya said the nomination itself was “enough for me”, so taking home the award made it that much sweeter.

“We don’t do it for the awards. We do it to entertain and tell people’s stories.”

You can read his work in Sowetan and Sunday World.
