Community members packed the North West High Court on Wednesday before  sentencing got under way for two farm workers who were found guilty of murdering teenager Matlhomola Mosweu in the town of Coligny.

Phillip Schutte and Pieter Doorewaard

were found guilty in October 2018 of murdering Mosweu, of Scotland informal settlement, after accusing him of stealing sunflowers.

During their last appearance,  state prosecutor Advocate Rapula Molefe submitted that Mosweu’s killing was brutal, savage, horrible and barbaric.

The 16-year-old was assaulted before being thrown from a moving bakkie.

EFF regional secretary Dintwe Mekgwe held a night vigil outside the court in Mahikeng.

The party, which has been supporting Mosweu’s family, said the aim was to send a clear message to the court that the two should be sentenced to no less than 25 years in prison.

“We are very clear that we want life sentences, but minimum must be nothing less than 25 years.

“We are here to say these murderers must go jail for life, as they have ended a life of an innocent boy who we expected a lot from,” he said.

Friends and family members were there to support the two men, but the parents of Mosweu were yet to arrive as court proceedings got under way at 10am.
