Free State police are appealing to the family of a man whose body was found underground at Eland mine in Welkom to come forward.

Police spokesperson Capt Stephen Thakeng said the body of the illegal miner, believed to be in his fifties, was found on November 5 2018.

Thakeng said security officers at the mine had found the body, which was in a decomposed state. The man was wearing blue pants and a red towel and had dreadlocks.

"We will try all avenues, and if no one comes forward, the body will be buried," Thakeng said.

Any person who might know the relatives of the man can contact Const Modiehi Monelloa on 057 391 6284 during office hours.
