South Africans have been reeling in shock and anger after learning about the death of a 19-year-old pupil from Mondeor High School, in the south of Johannesburg on Wednesday morning.

From the discovery of the body to the arrest, here's a wrap of what has happened so far.

Emergency services at the scene

When ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene just after 8am, they said there were already other emergency services who were assessing the pupil.

They confirmed to TimesLIVE that he had sustained a stab wound to his chest and showed no signs of life.

Pupil's identity

The body was later identified as 19-year-old Kulani Mathebula, who was a grade 11 pupil at Mondeor High School. He is the grandchild of Xitsonga musician, Thomas Chauke.

Family's reaction

Chauke's uncle Themba Chauke said he was shocked when he saw his nephew's body after he received a call from his brother telling him to rush to the scene.

Kulani's mother Dumi Chauke, who was present at the scene as her son's body was removed, was crying as she asked why her only son was taken away from her.

Education's response

Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi took to Twitter to express his shock and sadness about the incident, saying: "It's scenes like this, of parents mourning, that break my heart. Our learner was attacked on his way to school by thugs."

He later went to the school where he told the pupils of the ordeal that the police would find Kulani's murders. Lesufi described the announcement as one of the most difficult tasks of his career.

Arrests

Three suspects have been arrested in connection to the murder. They are aged between 13 and 15 years.

The 13 year old was nabbed on Wednesday afternoon and the two 15 year olds were arrested on Thursday morning in Soweto and Naturena.
