A Durban man has been jailed for 15 years for a brutal hostel murder two years ago.

Nkanyiso Daniel Mhlongo, 25, was sentenced in the Verulam Regional Court on Wednesday for the murder of 33-year-old Dumusani Luthuli.

Police spokesperson Capt Nqobile Gwala, explaining the circumstances surrounding the killing, said Luthuli was with his friends in Kholwa Road, at KwaMashu Hostel, when they were approached by Mhlongo in December 2017.

"The accused had an argument with the victim, resulting in the stabbing of the victim, whose throat was also slit.

"Following a comprehensive investigation by detectives, the accused was traced to Maphumulo, where he was arrested and brought to book.

"He made several court appearances, until he was convicted and sentenced by the Verulam Regional Court," she said.
