A motorist died instantly when he lost control of his vehicle and collided with an electricity pylon after knocking over a pedestrian in Durban on Friday night.

Rescue Care spokesman Garrith Jamieson said the single-vehicle collision took place in Umgeni Road, Durban-bound.

"It appears the driver clipped a pedestrian walking across the road, before losing control and colliding into an electricity pylon.

"The vehicle was extensively damaged."

Jamieson said the man, believed to be in his thirties, had suffered severe injuries and was declared dead at the scene.

"The pedestrian sustained minor injuries and was treated by paramedics."

Jamieson police would investigate the cause of the collision.
