Mercedes, Golf GTI drivers arrested for speeding at more than 200km/h

A 35-year-old man who was "rushing to a meeting" was arrested after being caught driving 205km per hour in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg.

The man, who was driving a black Golf GTI, was apprehended by the Gauteng traffic police's high-speed unit on Friday.

"He was arrested on the spot and taken to Lenasia South police station where he was charged with reckless driving and exceeding 120km/h on a freeway. The man was later released on R1,500 bail,” said department of community safety spokesperson Ofentse Morwane.   

The arrest comes after 16 road fatalities were recorded in Gauteng at the weekend.   

Reckless and negligent driving and drinking and driving were factors associated with many of the weekend's fatal crashes, said Morwane.

In a separate incident, a 28-year-old man was arrested on the N3 freeway towards Van Buuren Road after he was caught speeding at 204km/hr in a white Mercedes-Benz, said Morwane.  

"He was detained at Bedfordview police station and charged with reckless and negligent driving with an alternative charge of exceeding the speed limit. He was released on R1,500 bail," he said.

Gauteng traffic police and other provincial law enforcement agencies say they will deal decisively with those who do not adhere to the rules of the road.
