Images of burning tyres, traffic chaos and angry residents taking to the streets of Alexandra have gone viral.

Residents blocked roads from the early hours of Wednesday morning, with police maintaining a strong presence.

Many people have been unable to leave the area as roads were barricaded and entries blocked.

The issues behind the protest include insufficient waste management and illegal buildings in the township, including informal settlements built under electricity pylons.
