A 27-year-old security guard was shot in his pelvic area in Hatfield, Pretoria, on Thursday as he responded to reports of an armed robbery.

Netcare 911 said it responded to reports of a shooting on Stanza Bopape Street in Hatfield.

"Reports from the scene indicate that a 27-year-old male security guard had responded to reports of an armed robbery when he was shot in the pelvic region by an armed robber.

"The patient was assessed on scene by an advanced life support paramedic and found to be in a critical condition," Netcare 911 spokesman Shawn Herbst said.

Herbst further added that because of the seriousness of his injuries, the man was airlifted to a specialist facility for further treatment.

He said the circumstances leading to the shooting would be investigated by police.
