A man has been arrested in the Eastern Cape following the gruesome discovery of a one-year-old boy's body in Phoenix, Durban.

The man, 31, was arrested after the little boy’s body was found in an open grassy area at the end of a cul de sac in Loft Manor Place, Trenance Manor, in Phoenix on Tuesday. The boy had been reported missing on Saturday from the Amaoti area, near Phoenix. A missing person's report was opened at Inanda police station.

"Police officers started the search immediately. Police officers from Phoenix acted on intelligence with regards to the whereabouts of the suspect. Their investigation led them to the Eastern Cape, where the suspect was arrested," said KZN police spokesman Lt-Col Thulani Zwane.

Zwane said that the man was being detained at Phoenix police station and would appear in court on April 8.
