Sars faces off with British American Tobacco over R143m tax bill

The SA Revenue Service says it is owed R143m by the local arm of British American Tobacco as a result of tax fraud and evasion.

The tobacco giant, however, argues that the receiver actually owes it R30m, and has declined a deal to pay Sars in return for not having to face prosecution.

A letter from Sars to BAT-SA on October 25, 2018 says the alleged contraventions were discovered after a Sars audit.
