A shootout between law enforcement officers and alleged hijackers in Blairgowrie, Johannesburg, led to the death of one person. This is what we know so far:

Attempted hijacking 

Five suspects allegedly tried to hijack a Hyundai Elantra in the early hours of the morning. The police intervened and shot at them in a car chase that ended near a petrol station, TimesLIVE reported. 

Fatalities and injuries 

During the chase, one of the five suspects was shot dead while two others were injured. 

Recovered possessions 

The police found four illegal firearms and the suspects were allegedly travelling in a hijacked Volkswagen Tiguan. 

Arrests

Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo confirmed on JacarandaFM on Friday morning that four people had been arrested. They face charges of attempted hijacking and possession of unlicensed firearms.
