WhatsApp, Facebook & Instagram went down and the world crumbled
Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp experienced malfunctions on Sunday which had many users venting on Twitter.
Downdetector reported a peak in reports around 4pm on Sunday with as many as 4,803 reports of WhatsApp malfunctioning in South Africa.
Reuters reported later that Facebook, owner of all three platforms, said the issue had been resolved and apologised for the inconvenience but could not specify what prompted the problems.
Some of the problems reported were connection, inability to receive messages and issues with logging in.
Instagram users also experienced issues with the platform on Sunday afternoon with more than 2,000 reports of problems. Port Elizabeth, Johannesburg and Cape Town reported the most outages according to the live outage map.
Many took to Twitter - owned by a different company than the other platforms - in the wake of the social media outage.
