Domestic disturbance: plight of workers in SA homes worsening

Even after the implementation of the Minimum Wage Bill, there are still thousands of employers failing to pay the legislated R3,500 per month, or R20 hourly rate. Most employers are adhering to it, but failing their employees on other levels.

Eight out of every 10 are sole breadwinners, five of 10 are single mothers caring for, on average, four people, 16% have experienced physical or verbal abuse at work, and nearly half earn lower than the minimum wage.

This is the reality for SA’s domestic workers – and it’s getting worse, says a study.
