Pelonomi Hospital staff: ‘Our families fear we won’t come home’

A 24-year old doctor was attacked while she was on call at Pelonomi hospital in Bloemfontein on June 4 2019. The attacker shoved his tongue into her mouth but she fought back and bit the man’s tongue off. She escaped unharmed but the incident has raised concern about whether our doctors are safe.

“Are you ever going to come back or not?”

This is what family members put to female doctors before they report for work at Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein, a crime-ridden area where health workers have become soft targets.
