WATCH | Tobacco boss Simon Rudland wounded in Johannesburg shooting

Millionaire tobacco boss Simon Rudland, who was shot in a suspected assassination attempt, is doing "okay" in hospital, according to the Fair-Trade Independent Tobacco Association (Fita). 

"He's okay. He is a strong man, but obviously no one expected something like this to happen. As long as he is alive, we are grateful for that," said Fita chairperson Sinenhlanhla Mnguni.

Rudland was shot in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

Mnguni said Fita, of which Rudland is a member, would release a statement with more details later in the day.

Fita earlier released a statement confirming that "an incident" had occurred outside its offices.

"We further confirm that members of the SAPS attended at our offices for purposes of conducting their investigations and they were ... handed CCTV footage of the aforementioned incident.

"There will be no further comment on this issue for now and we ask that the SAPS be allowed to conduct their investigations," the organisation said.

Details around the shooting are still sketchy. Police spokesperson Kay Makhubele said Rudland immediately went to hospital after being shot several times.

“Two people who were in the car were shot. They are both in hospital,” said Makhubele.

"I am still waiting for a police report,” he added.

In a video circulating on social media, a black Porsche Boxster, believed to be Rudland’s, is shown pulling up to a gate. A white Golf pulls alongside and shots are fired from the vehicle at the Porsche. 

Both cars drove away from the scene.
