Six people were killed in a horrific crash involving a truck and several cars in Cato Ridge, outside Pietermaritzburg on Friday.

KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services spokesman Robert McKenzie said the accident took place on a district road.

"Six people have died and one is in a critical condition."

He said a further five people suffered serious injuries.

McKenzie said the cause of the accident was unknown.
