SA passes 16,000 Covid-19 deaths
South Africa passed yet another grim Covid-19 milestone on Tuesday, as more than 16,000 deaths have now been confirmed linked to the respiratory illness.
Health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize said 126 deaths had been recorded in the past 24 hours - 54 in KwaZulu-Natal, 45 in Gauteng, 17 in the Western Cape and five each in the Eastern Cape and the North West.

US surpasses grim milestone of 200,000 Covid-19 deaths
The death toll from the spread of the coronavirus in the United States exceeded 200,000 on Tuesday, by the far the highest number of any nation.
The United States, on a weekly average, is now losing about 800 lives each day to the virus, according to a Reuters tally. That is down from a peak of 2,806 daily deaths recorded on April 15.

Bheki Cele 'disturbed' by liquor outlets disregarding lockdown laws
Police minister Bheki Cele says he is shocked and disgusted by the blatant disregard of lockdown rules by some liquor outlet owners in the name of profit.
Cele, who was speaking at a media briefing on Tuesday, said he joined a police operation in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, with cops, the defence force and provincial traffic law enforcement. He said they came across several shebeens and taverns operating way past the stipulated 10pm curfew under alert level 2.

Counsellors sent to Eastern Cape school where 102 pupils got Covid-19
The department of education has sent a team of counsellors to support the Ethembeni Secondary School community in Burgersdorp in the Eastern Cape where 102 schoolchildren tested positive for Covid-19.
At the weekend the number of confirmed cases was recorded at 98. There was confusion on Monday morning, with the total being reported as 172 and then 117. However, education spokesperson Loyiso Pulumani said the confirmed number was 102.

Rand falls again on Covid-19 fears and promise of more billions for SAA
The rand weakened again early on Tuesday after a sharp plunge in the previous session when fears of a second wave of global coronavirus infections triggered a worldwide sell-off of riskier assets.
At 0630 GMT the rand was 0.69% weaker at 16.8950 per dollar, close to Monday's one-and-a-half week bottom of 16.9450.

Tuesday is deadline for no-penalty renewal of car licences that expired during lockdown
Tuesday is the deadline for the renewal of motor vehicle licence discs that expired during the Covid-19 lockdown between end March and May 31.
An extension in the validity period of all motor vehicle licences, permits and roadworthy certificates that expired was granted to end-August, said the Road Traffic Management Corporation. “Beyond this period, motorists were entitled to 21 days in which to renew the vehicle discs without incurring late payment costs.”
