82 more deaths recorded in SA

There were 82 more deaths and 1,541 new cases of Covid-19 recorded in SA, according to the statistics released by the health department on Saturday. 

The total number of confirmed cases is 1,528,414, while the total number of deaths is 51,261.

The total number of recoveries is 1,452,988 and 145,544 vaccines have been administered so far.

Hong Kong orders compulsory coronavirus testing after gym cluster hits financial community

Some law firms and banks in Hong Kong face compulsory testing for coronavirus as most of the 47 new cases recorded on Saturday were linked to a gym used by the financial and expatriate community.

The city's government said 35 of the new cases were related to the outbreak at Ursus Fitness, a gym in the city's Sai Ying Pun district. The health department told a briefing that so far 99 cases have been confirmed as related to the centre, which is popular with expatriate lawyers, bankers and hedge fund executives.

Philippines detects Brazil, local Covid-19 variants as cases surge

The Philippines on Saturday reported a spike in coronavirus infections and its first case of the highly contagious variant first identified in Brazil, while confirming nearly 100 infections of a new variant discovered locally.

A Filipino returning from Brazil tested positive for the P.1 Brazil variant after 752 samples were sequenced at the genome centre, the health ministry said in a statement.

It also reported that 98 cases were of the similar P.3 variant first detected in the Southeast Asian country early this month.

Brazil registers 85,663 new coronavirus cases and 2,216 new COVID-19 deaths-health ministry

Brazil reported 2,216 COVID-19 deaths in the last 24 hours, the third day in a row that it has had fatalities exceed 2,000 in the worst run of deaths since the pandemic began last year.

The South American country also reported 85,663 new cases of the coronavirus infection, the second highest number for a day. Brazil has now registered 11,363,380 cases in all, while the official death toll has risen to 275,105, according to ministry data, in the world's second-deadliest outbreak outside the United States.
