Two Limpopo paramedics were killed on the N1 near Codrington during the early hours of Tuesday when their ambulance crashed into the back of a stationary vehicle.
Limpopo department of transport and community safety spokesperson Mike Maringa said the driver and passenger were killed on impact.
Limpopo transport MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya conveyed her condolences to the families of the two emergency personnel.
“It is disturbing to wake up to the sad news of the passing of emergency workers who died in the line of duty. These are the same people we rely on to save lives on the roads. We call on our drivers to be extra cautious and drive within the limits,” said Lerule-Ramakhanya.
The cause of the crash is unknown.
Limpopo health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba expressed sadness at the passing of the two ER24 crew members. The MEC's spokesperson Thilivhali Muavha said the Limpopo EMS responded to an emergency call at 12.30am and on arrival found the two members had died.
“It is with deep sorrow and sadness that the province announces we have lost two ER24 crew members who were dedicated to saving lives,” Ramathuba said.
“The loss of an emergency medical services member is an especially great loss as it takes time to train them.”
