Dan Marokane is expected to be appointed as the CEO of struggling state power utility Eskom, Bloomberg News reported on Thursday, citing unnamed sources.
Spokespeople for Eskom and the department of public enterprises, which oversees the power company, declined to comment on the Bloomberg report.
Eskom has been without a permanent CEO since André de Ruyter left in February.
Marokane is acting CEO at sugar producer Tongaat Hulett. He previously served as an executive at Eskom.
Eskom has struggled to keep the lights on in Africa's most industrialised economy for more than a decade.
This year it has implemented the worst power cuts on record, leaving households and businesses without electricity for up to 10 hours a day.
Tongaat Hulett, which appointed Marokane as its acting CEO in February, said on its website he had helped the company with internal cashflow optimisation programmes and management of asset disposals.
Marokane has a BSc Chem Eng, MSc Pet Eng and an MBA and has held senior executive roles over the past 20 years in the oil and gas, power and agro-processing industries, the company said.
He was previously the chair of the Eskom Enterprises Board and the Eskom Roshcon and Rotek Industries Board. He also served as a member of the UK High Commission Management Board in South Africa and is a member of the University of Johannesburg Engineering Advisory Board. He joined Tongaat Hulett as an executive in January 2018.
