Radio and club DJ Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was fatally shot in the Johannesburg CBD on Tuesday in what is believed to have been an eviction showdown.

Reports suggest DJ Warras was actively involved with a security company conducting evictions when an unknown gunman walked up to him and fired a single shot.

Speaking to SABC News, his sister Nicole Stock said the family was struggling to process his death.

“I am in shock. I don’t have words. I am shattered. We know he was a voice for many people around the country. He spoke out bravely about issues not many people were willing to speak about. This is a tremendous loss,” she said.

She appealed to social media users to act responsibly and refrain from sharing graphic images related to his death, describing DJ Warras as a selfless person.

Tributes have begun to pour in for the popular DJ.

Build One South Africa leader and MP Mmusi Maimane condemned the killing, describing it as a shock to the nation.

Fans and supporters have taken to social media to express their shock and grief.

The South African Police Service issued a statement: “SAPS is investigating a murder case after a 40-year-old man was fatally shot in Johannesburg Central on December 16.

“It is alleged the victim was approached by three unknown suspects after parking his vehicle, and they opened fire at him before fleeing the scene on foot. The motive for the shooting is unknown.

“No arrest has been made yet and the investigation is continuing.”
