A woman was killed in Knysna in the Western Cape after a tree fell on her vehicle on Wednesday.

Western Cape Social Development MEC Jaco Londt identified the woman as Lauren Fredericks.

He expressed his condolences to the family, friends and colleagues.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Christopher Spies said an inquest docket was opened.

He said the body of a 37-year-old woman was retrieved from the vehicle at about 11am on Main Street.

“Reports available indicate emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene in front of the Knysna police station at about 7.50am.

“On arrival, they found a vehicle under a tree with the driver trapped inside. She was declared dead by paramedics at the scene.”

A portion of the road was closed while clearing operations were conducted.

Londt said Fredericks joined the department’s Knysna office as a social auxiliary worker in August 2021.

“She was on her way to conduct assessments of residents who were evacuated in the area due to adverse weather conditions. Shortly after stopping, a tree fell on the car.

“I am deeply saddened by this loss.

“Fredericks had a love for community work and was part of the office’s disaster management response team.

“Our thoughts are with her family — particularly her young son, friends and colleagues during this difficult time,” Londt said.

“I further wish to acknowledge all frontline workers, including staff, who continue to support and assist vulnerable residents during the current adverse weather conditions.”

Persistent overnight rainfall has led to widespread flooding and hazardous conditions across parts of the Garden Route, with authorities urging caution.
