The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal says the murder of eThekwini councillor Sibusiso Cedric “Khekhe” Khwela is an attack on democratic institutions and on every community that believes in peace, justice and service to the people.

The ANC said Khwela was shot and killed while in his office on Thursday afternoon.

It is alleged that an unknown assailant stormed in and shot him while he was doing community work.

“This barbaric act has robbed the people of ward 17, Klaarwater, Savannah Park and surrounding areas of a committed public servant whose life was dedicated to improving the lives of the communities he served.

“The ANC extends its deepest condolences to the Khwela family, friends, comrades, the people of ward 17 and the entire eThekwini caucus.”

The ANC said political differences, criminality or any grievance could never justify the taking of a human life. “Those responsible must be hunted down, arrested and brought before the full might of the law without delay.”

The ANC said the continued targeting and killing of public representatives threatened the very foundation of the country’s democracy. “Councillors dedicate themselves to serving communities and should never have to live under the constant fear of violence or assassination.”
