Western Cape police are investigating a theft from a motor vehicle after Afrika Mayibuye Movement leader Floyd Shivambu and his colleagues were allegedly robbed while attending a meeting at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront on Wednesday.
Speaking to TimesLIVE on Thursday, Shivambu said they had parked in an outdoor parking area after being directed there by a security guard before attending a meeting to verify the party’s councillor candidates.
“We were shown where to park by the security guard on duty. We went inside for our meeting and about an hour later discovered that the hired vehicle had been broken into,” he said.
Shivambu said the thieves stole a travel bag, a handbag and a backpack containing a MacBook Pro laptop, two iPads, watches, identity documents, bank cards and other personal belongings.
He said V&A Waterfront security reviewed CCTV footage and identified the suspect.
“We opened a case with the SAPS at Table Bay Harbour police station. There were also other victims at the station reporting similar thefts,” he said.
Western Cape police spokesperson Capt Frederick van Wyk confirmed that a case of theft had been opened. “The case was registered on Wednesday. No arrests have been made, and the investigation continues.”
Shivambu said he hoped those responsible would be arrested and the stolen property recovered.
