The corruption and money laundering trial of former National Assembly speaker and defence minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula in the Pretoria high court has laid bare stunning allegations of cash drop-offs, lavish spending and clandestine communication.
Mapisa-Nqakula is charged with 12 counts of corruption and money laundering for allegedly soliciting R4.5m in bribes from defence contractor Nombasa Ntsondwa-Ndhlovu.
As state witnesses take the stand, explosive details have emerged about how millions in alleged bribe money were delivered and spent.
Testimony revealed that hundreds of thousands of rand in cash was allegedly dropped off in gift bags, stored in home safes or referred to as a “wig”, with more than R1.8m spent on renovations and custom furnishings for Mapisa-Nqakula’s Bruma home, including R600,000 on curtains alone.
