Do you hear Yanni or Laurel? President Donald Trump's answer is "covfefe".

Much like the internet meltdown three years ago over the colour of a particular dress, a simple four-second audio clip has polarised the internet fought over which word users heard.

The Chicago Tribune spoke to Dr. Andrew Fishman, director of neurotology at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, who explained that the reason different people have a different response to that question is because not all of our ears work the same, and some of the response depends on what's going on in your brain.

This is why the musician Yanni definitely hears "Yanni" - while people named Laurel definitely hear "Laurel".

“Basic information is recorded and sent to the brain by the ear, somewhere up in those cognitive areas, we add our own interpretation,” Fishman told the paper.
