Christmas festivities start at the beginning of December for Austrian Sabine Gollnhuber who transforms her home into a spectacular Christmas light show every year.

According to EuroNews, Gollnhuber spares no expense when it comes to her outrageous Christmas display. Her annual masterpiece uses over half a million lightbulbs.

The display also boasts a Santa Claus on a plane, as well as Dr Seuss's famous character The Grinch.

Gollnhuber started this festive season tradition eight years ago. Every year she welcomes more visitors from across the globe to see her labour of love.

Reuters recently posted a video showing her latest creation, with scores of people enjoying the intricate display.

Gollnhuber's light bill is said to be over R30,000 during the festive period - a hefty price to pay for Christmas cheer.

In SA some homeowners buy into the Christmas light extravaganza.

Northglen News reported on the Munsamy family home in Durban's Somerset Park, which comes alive every Christmas. The family's display is an annual highlight in the neighbourhood.
