A US court has sentenced a deer poacher to monthly viewings of the Disney classic Bambi, a movie about a young deer who adjusts to life after her mother is killed by a hunter.

According to TIME, poacher David Berry jnr was convicted of illegally hunting and killing deer in Missouri.

He was sentenced to 12 months in prison. He was also ordered to watch Bambi once a month while serving his time.

The BBC reported that Berry jnr was charged along with two relatives, including his father.

He also received 120-day sentence for a firearm probation violation. The Missouri Conservation Commission issued him with a lifetime ban for hunting in the state.

Sky News confirmed that Berry jnr and his co-accused had also paid $51,000 in fines.

The court specified that Berry jnr's first Bambi viewing must be "on or before December 23 2018".

Don Trotter, the prosecuting attorney, said: "The deer were trophy bucks taken illegally, mostly at night, for their heads, leaving the bodies of the deer to waste."

Some people don't think the sentence is severe enough for Berry jnr's crimes, and they doubt that the beloved movie will rehabilitate the deer killer.
