The Amazon head and his soon-to-be ex-wife MacKenzie have topped the list of  50 donors who gave the most to charity in 2018, according to The Chronicle of Philanthropy's annual list.

The top 50 donors gave $7.8bn (R108bn) overall to charitable causes in 2018, which is only just over half of the $14.7bn that found its way to charities in 2017.

The Bezos family donated $2bn to poor families, former mayor of New York City and businessman Michael Bloomberg gave $767m to arts, education, environmental causes and health.

According to Forbes, Bezos has a net worth of $135bn, followed by Bill Gates with a net worth of $97bn.

Only two of the Forbes top 10 of world billionaires made it to the top 10 of donors, including Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan, who came in at number seven donating $213m.

Third on the list were eBay founder Pierre Omidyar and his wife Pam, who gave away $392m towards among other issues, non-profit organisations that promote citizen activism.

Others in the top 10 include businessman Stephen Schwarzman ($390m), former hedge fund manager John Arnold and his wife Laura ($204bn) and the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen ($261bn), who died in October .
