Night News Editor

Reporting to: TimesLIVE Editor

Publication: TimesLIVE/Sunday Times

Location: Parktown, Johannesburg

Purpose of the Job:

TimesLIVE is looking for a Night News Editor with a keen eye for detail, a passion for journalism and an ability to curate compelling content for our subscribers. We are looking for a news editor to oversee a dynamic team of reporters and specialist senior writers, ensuring their content is accurate, and adheres to our editorial standards and code of ethics. We are looking for someone innovative and creative, who is comfortable using technology to tell stories. You must be passionate about the digital news ecosystem and what your role is in its evolution. As a News Editor, you will work closely with other senior editors and the production team in managing the news calendar, rosters and shifts among others.

Main responsibilities/Outcomes:

  • Edit and proofread news articles for accuracy, coherence, clarity and adherence to editorial standards
  • Coordinate with journalists and other editors to plan and execute news coverage
  • Oversee the daily news operations
  • Ensure timely and accurate publication of stories
  • Curate Premium news content for subscribers
  • Mentor and provide feedback to junior staff members
  • Monitor audience and work with other editors to adjust content strategies accordingly
  • Take overall responsibility for nigh shift news operation
  • Monitor the wires and follow up with reporters to ensure our news site and social media are updated
  • Work closely with production team to ensure seamless news flow

Qualifications, Experience and Knowledge:

  • Qualifications, Experience and Knowledge:
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communication, or a related field
  • Minimum of five years-experience in a newsroom environment
  • Strong leadership and team management skills

Skills and Attributes:

  • An ability to write with flair and accuracy
  • The ability to generate story ideas, identify strong news angles and keep abreast of developments in general news
  • An ability to go beyond the numbers, reports and minutes to tell compelling stories with personality and human faces
  • A keen interest in uncovering the backstory behind news and events
  • The ability to work in a high-pressure environment and consistently deliver quality content across online platforms and print
  • The successful candidate will be motivated, able to work independently, be a team player and work irregular hours, including on holidays on short notice.

Specialist Reporter

Reporting to: TimesLIVE Editor

Location: Parktown, Johannesburg

Purpose of the Job:

To identify, investigate and write in-depth, hard-hitting, exclusive news reports of national interest and impact for Sunday Times and related platforms

Main responsibilities/Outcomes:

  • Break compelling hard-news stories ahead of competitors
  • Identify and pursue in-depth, exclusive hard-hitting journalism pieces
  • Write news features and analysis pieces
  • Investigate reports by government departments and SOEs
  • Establish and maintain an extensive contact base with senior contacts in all sectors and key people in government with a view to sourcing stories
  • Work to established style and deadlines
  • Ensure delivery of high-quality stories
  • Perform any other duty as is reasonably assigned by line manager.

Requirements:

  • Experience in a digital role in a newsroom
  • At least 10 years’ journalism experience
  • At least 3-5 years' management experience
  • At least 3-5 years' experience working with audio and video
  • Familiar with audio and video editing software
  • Valid driver’s licence

  • Relevant journalism Diploma/Degree or equivalent;
  • At least five years’ experience in journalism;
  • A good general knowledge
