The DA is questioning why two Gauteng policemen and Mzwandile Petros, a general in the Gauteng provincial police office need to apologise to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

Winnie Mandela is demanding an apology from two policemen for pulling her car over on the M1 North.

The officers had pulled the Silver Audi A6 over for travelling at 150km an hour and driving through traffic recklessly Beeld newspaper reported on Wednesday.

One of the officers, Jannie Odendaal, told reporters that Winnie yelled “Who the eff do you think you are?”

The DA meanwhile wonders who Winnie thinks she is. DA MPL Kate Lorimer said “Ms. Mandela is a Member of Parliament, no more, no less. She has no special dispensation when it comes to breaking the law. The bodyguard allegedly claimed that Ms.Madikizela-Mandela was running late for some appointment. This is no excuse for breaking the speed limit and Ms. Madikizela-Mandela should know better.”

Petros will accompany Odendaal and his colleague so they can apologise, the newspaper reported.

Odendaal meanwhile feels that there may be no place for him in the police service as Winnie’s word is being taken over his.

The officers made a note of the event in an incident book but did not write up a charge because they assumed nothing would come of it. However, last week they were told that Winnie, her bodyguard and the driver are pressing three charges against them.

Odendaal’s colleague does not wish to be named, and refuses to comment on the incident.
