ANC assesses KwaZulu-Natal MECs

ANC members in the KwaZulu-Natal legislature, including MECs, are being assessed to see if they perform their duties well, the ANC said on Tuesday.

"The assessment of MECs and chairmen of portfolios is ongoing," ANC provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala told reporters in Durban.

Zikalala dismissed reports that KwaZulu-Natal premier Zweli Mkhize was about to reshuffle his executive council.

He declined to say what would happen to people found to have performed badly.

"We will answer that question when we get there," Zikalala said.

The assessment was being done by ANC officials, led by the organisation's secretariat.

They would report to the party's provincial executive committee and the provincial working committee.

"The aim of this process is to assess accountability of our members. It will help us see how they perform in the legislature and caucuses. This will help to improve service delivery," said ANC deputy secretary Nomusa Dube.

She said the process was not aimed at removing people, saying the province was regarded as one of the best-performing in the country.
