Young people should exercise their right and register to vote next year, the Independent Electoral Commission said on Tuesday.

"We appeal to the youth, especially those who are eligible to vote for the first time, to register so that they can vote," said IEC chairwoman Pansy Tlakula.

She launched the 2014 national and provincial election campaign in Cape Town on Tuesday.

Voter registration would take place on November 9 and 10, she said.

"Political parties should encourage voters everywhere to register. We also appeal for political tolerance and a free environment for free campaigning."
