Gauteng residents to cough up more for services

Residents of the City of Joburg will have to cough up more cash for services provided by the council in as of July 1.

Finance MMC Geoffrey Makhubo announced today during a media briefing ahead of his budget speech that the average increase for electricity in the coming year would be 7.05% which is lower than the tariff increase of 7.3% announced by power producer Eskom and the National Energy Regulator SA (Nersa). This electricity increase will provide the city with a revenue of R13.6-billion.

Registered indigent households will continue to receive free electricity, water and sanitation as stipulated in the metro's extended social package.

Tariffs for waste removal services will increase by 6% for domestic households and 8% for business and commercial customers.

Properties valued at less than R200 000 and registered indigent households will continue to receive free refuse removal services.

Property rates will increase by 5%.
