President Jacob Zuma's intentions cannot be doubted following his state-of-the-nation address, National Freedom Party leader Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi said.

Participating in the parliamentary debate on Zuma's speech, kaMagwaza-Msibi said Zuma correctly focused on the importance of improving the country's economic growth.

"It recognised the importance of economic growth as fundamental to a stable democracy," she said of Zuma's speech.

"It recognised the economy is functioning below its potential. It proposed various interventions."

She welcomed Zuma's focus on the transformation of the energy sector and the need for structural changes to the country's state-owned enterprises, but was wary of a nuclear build programme.

"The issue of nuclear energy is not without its inherent dangers," kaMagwaza-Msibi said.

"It's expensive, with concerns of safety and health."

The NFP was also concerned about government's response to the fast pace of urbanisation.

"South African cities are already burdened with an influx of people for which it cannot cater in terms of housing... jobs."
