The DA apparently tweeted a picture likening ANC voters to dogs, the party alleges.

According to a media release hosted on Politicsweb, the ANC has noted that DA MP Michael Waters tweeted a picture "which likens people who voted for the ANC to dogs."

The picture, captioned "Voting Day. Make your mark", shows a line of dogs in front of a poster of Jacob Zuma,

"We are neither shocked nor surprised by this behaviour from a member of the DA as the party proves on a regular basis that it is nothing but a collection of bigoted racists who continue to regard black people as sub-human, dogs," the ANC said in its statement.

"This is but the latest example in a long litany of insults against black people by the DA including the racist Botha calling Comrade Zodwa Magwaza a baboon and Stanford Slabbert who called the people of this country "dumb idiots who wait for handouts" amongst others," The ANC said.

Waters apparently posted the picture on Monday night, but took it down again after encountering a backlash from Twitter users.

According to a report on ENCA Waters apologised for the tweet, saying it was "just a joke."

Democratic Alliance spokeswoman Phumzile van Damme said the party had accepted Waters' apology.

"Mike has unreservedly apologised for the tweet. He is not a racist person and has acknowledged that the picture is offensive and distasteful, and we have accepted that," Van Damme said.

She said the party would soon review its social media policy.
