Journalists are reporting that once they are inside parliament they are unable to use their cell phones.

The Times journalist Jan-Jan Joubert says those seated in the National Assembly had their cellphone and signals jammed and thus could not report what was happening in the National Assembly, by text, sms or twitter.

The South African National Editors Forum has called on parliamentary officials and the Presidency to urgently review the decision to cut off cell phone signal in the chamber.

It says this action has resulted in Parliament being an island, divorced from the people it represents.

Sanef tweeted the effect of the signal cut-off is that journalists won't be able to file stories and pictures from tonight's #SONA.

Sanef says it is disgusted by the decision to cut off all communication signals from around the National Assembly chamber.
