Maimane on the campaign trail in PE

Mmusi Maimane was scheduled to lend his weight to the battle over a “vital” ward in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro on Monday. The Democratic Alliance (DA) leader’s visit comes two day’s ahead of the by-election for Ward 30‚ which it will compete for against the African National Congress (ANC) and the United Democratic Movement.A win by either opposition party would reduce the ruling party’s three-seat majority in the municipality.The province’s premier Phumulo Masualle and Bay mayor Danny Jordaan got in first with a lightning visit to the ward on Sunday.Heraldlive reported that Masualle was on the receiving end of the wrath of disillusioned Veeplaas – one of the suburbs making up the ward; the other is KwaMagxaki - residents‚ who told him the ANC must pull itself together as they were fed-up with the slow pace of service delivery.Shoddily built RDP houses and unemployment were two of the biggest problems‚ they told Masualle and Jordaan on a blitz down Veeplaas’ Kani Street‚ where the DA is expected to campaign on Monday.The ANC’s candidate for the by-election is Sizakele Mnqamisa and the DA is represented by Eric Jinikwe.Maimane’s visit to the Bay is also to help the DA’s campaign ahead of a student representative council (SRC) election at Nelson Mandela Metro University‚ where it hopes to maintain the control its Democratic Associaction Student Organisation (Daso) won last year.Daso in May obtained 52.5% of the vote in SRC elections at Fort Hare University‚ beating the the ANC-aligned SA Students Congress...
