Hawks, NPA deny any knowledge of new charges against Breytenbach
The Hawks and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) have claimed to know nothing about a report that DA MP and former prosecutor Glynnis Breytenbach could be charged with corruption because of tender interference.
"There is no docket," said Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.
But according to the Cape Times, Mulaudzi said investigations into three separate charges of corruption were at an advanced stage and that she could be arrested soon.
NPA spokesperson Luvuyo Mfaku told News2: "We bear no knowledge of that."
The Cape Times reported earlier that Breytenbach faced arrest again – this time for defeating the ends of justice, and corruption that involved interference in the awarding of multi-million rand tender contracts.
According to unnamed sources, she reportedly stands accused of abuse of power to influence the awarding of tenders involving a medical aid scheme and projects in the construction industry while she was still at the NPA.
Raid competitor's offices Breytenbach appeared in court last week after the NPA claimed she shredded work-related papers and wiped her laptop’s hard drive clean while she was still the head of the organisation's specialised commercial crimes unit.
Breytenbach refuted this, saying she went through an internal disciplinary hearing and was acquitted on all charges.
Following the disciplinary hearing, Breytenbach resigned and later became a Democratic Alliance MP.
According to the report, Breytenbach and associates, who wanted to make sure Breytenbach's partner's company got contracts, would raid competitors' offices.
"Fixed" projects reportedly included Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg, the Nelson Mandela Bridge in Johannesburg and the Gautrain.
She also reportedly allegedly accepted a $1m loan with an Advocate Andre Bezuidenhout to become business partners in a British Virgin Islands-based business.
Breytenbach was not immediately available to News24 for comment.
