Mbete to consider request for vote on motion of no confidence in Zuma
Speaker of the National Assembly Baleka Mbete says she will consider requests for a parliamentary vote on a motion of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma.
She was talking to journalists at OR Tambo Airport in Johannesburg after cutting short a working trip to Bangladesh to address opposition calls for a motion of no confidence vote in the wake of a major Cabinet shake-up on Friday.
Among those making the call are the Democratic Alliance‚ the Congress of People party and the EFF.
Mbete said that given the seriousness of the matter and impact on the nation‚ she would ensure that the requests were given the appropriate consideration.
She said she would immediately begin a process of consultations and when concluded she would advise the parties involved of the outcome.
She assured South Africans that she “must and will arise to the occasion”.
She noted however that Parliament was only due to sit again at the beginning of May.
