Ex-president Jacob Zuma finally faced the music before the state capture inquiry on Monday, but he sang from the same hymn sheet in most of his answers: he had either forgotten, could not recall – or referred queries to the Guptas.

It was a bizarre mix of paranoia, conspiracy theories and ‘memory lapses’ on his first day in front of deputy chief justice Zondo.
