The DA’s Tania Campbell has been reinstated as mayor of Ekurhuleni after beating ANC candidate Jongizizwe Dlabathi.

Campbell received 124 votes out of 224 votes cast on Tuesday.

This comes after Campbell was removed via a motion of no confidence sponsored by the ANC.

DA Gauteng leader Solly Msimanga congratulated Campbell on her re-election.

“Once again we saw an attempt to bring an end to the hard work and dedication the multiparty [coalition] has brought to this great city.”

He said a “poor attempt at political point-scoring” had failed and the multiparty government led by Campbell must continue to “fix what the ANC broke”.

The EFF also fielded a candidate, Nkululeko Dunga, who later withdrew.

It is said his withdrawal was due to failed negotiations between the ANC and the EFF. This resulted in the EFF voting with the DA to reinstate Campbell.

ANC Ekurhuleni secretary Moipone Mhlongo said that they do not regret the decision to sponsor a motion of no confidence, nor are they ashamed of fielding a mayoral candidate.

“The reason we sponsored a motion of no confidence in Ekurhuleni was due to the dismal state of the city. It was regarding poor administration of the multiparty government and deterioration in the service delivery in the city. This is why we felt Mayor Campbell and her executive had to go. They were running the city into a crisis, aggravated by their unstable coalition,” Mhlongo said.

She added that under the DA, the city was suffering because of slow service delivery, citing the non-collection of waste. Mhlongo added that the city was in financial trouble and often has to choose between paying its bills or workers.

“This is why we intervened,” Mhlongo stated.

Regarding the failed coalition talks between the ANC and EFF, the regional secretary did not share much detail.

“Under any negotiation process there are bound to be differences. This is because we are different parties, and we have different ideologies. There are certain things we can’t divulge to the media because they were discussed in confidence. So out of respect for the other party and future relations, I cannot say further,” Mhlongo said.
