The EFF in Gauteng has called for the immediate closure of the Zanzou nightclub in Pretoria and the arrest of its owner after several videos showing alleged acts of human rights violations perpetrated by the security team at the club.

The videos allegedly show men being beaten, having their heads submerged in buckets of water and being forced to masturbate with beer bottles.

Provincial chairperson Nkululeko Dunga condemned the behaviour:  “Such abhorrent behaviour cannot be tolerated in a society that prides itself on upholding human dignity and justice.

“The EFF strongly believes there is no reason whatsoever to justify the dehumanisation of other people like that. We condemn these inhumane acts and demand immediate legal action against the perpetrators.”

The EFF protested outside the club on Monday night, demanding justice for the victims and accountability from club management.

Zanzou said the security personnel responsible for the abuse had been dismissed, and the club was exploring legal action.

The EFF insisted everyone involved, including the owner and manager, must face the law.

“The gravity of the offences, which include torture and other forms of cruel, inhuman and  degrading treatment, necessitates urgent intervention from law enforcement agencies to prevent further abuses and to safeguard the rights of all individuals.

“The EFF's stance is clear: justice must be served. Authorities are urged to conduct a thorough investigation into the incidents, ensuring all involved parties are held accountable. This includes not only those directly responsible for the acts of torture but also the management, who allowed such practices to occur under their watch. The rule of law must prevail to restore public confidence and uphold the values enshrined in the constitution.”

Police have confirmed they are investigating offences including compelled rape, assault, assault with grievous bodily harm, criminal injury and kidnapping.

Dunga said the EFF would report the matter to the SA Human Rights Commission to hold club management accountable.

Meanwhile, the man named on social media as the club owner, Stephane Cohen, said he is a silent strategic partner with no involvement in operational or managerial duties.

“I have not set foot in Zanzou in a very long time,” Cohen said.

“Recent public statements and protests have amplified misinformation about my involvement with Zanzou as well as my image being used recklessly, fuelling anger and misinformation that is spilling over into calls for my arrest.

“While I understand the anger and demand for justice, it is crucial discussions remain rooted in truth. False claims do not bring justice. They only divert attention from the real perpetrators.”
