The tabling of the 2025 budget has been moved to March 12 after a disagreement in the government of national unity about a two percentage point VAT increase.
Finance minister Enoch Godongwana announced in a press conference on Wednesday that the postponement was agreed to allow further deliberations on the budget.
“The budget must strike a balance between the interests of the public, economic growth and financial sustainability,” he said.
He conceded the discussions could lead to an amendment of the budget.

This follows a fight in cabinet where the DA threatened not to support the budget due to the VAT increase. The ANC will need the support of all GNU parties to pass the budget after it lost its parliamentary majority in the May 2024 elections. National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza told MPs the budget proceedings had never been postponed before in the three decades since the end of apartheid. #SouthAfrica #News www.timeslive.co.za
